UC SPACE EXPLORATION INSTITUTE

The University of Cincinnati Space Exploration Institute sponsored the Space Informatics Lab by establishing the Thomas Jefferson Endowed Chair in Space Exploration and earmarking funds to create a Space Exploration Research Fund.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FUNDATION
T. Stepinski is the CO-PI on a grant (#1103684) from the National Science Foundation, division of Information and Intelligent Systems. The title of the project is Automatic Geomorphic Mapping and Analysis of Land Surfaces Using Pattern Recognition. This project is a collaboration between T. Stepinski and Dr. Ricardo Vilalta from University of Houston; the project has its own web page hosted by UofH.

 

T. Stepinski is the PI on a grant (#1147702) from the National Science Foundation, division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences. The title of the project is Digital Mapping and Comparison of Natural and Synthetic Landscapes. This projects provides funds to extend LandEx to topographic data thus making possible to search for similar terrain landscapes.

 

NASA
T. Stepinski is the PI on a grant from NASA Applied Information Systems Research (AISR) program. The project title is Automated Identification and Characterization of Landforms on Mars. The abstract of this project is available here. Dr Wei Ding from the University of Massachusetts Boston is a CO-I on this project. Her group maintains dataset of martian craters.

 

T. Stepinski is the PI on a grant from NASA Advanced Information Systems Technology program (NNH14ZDA001N-AIST). The project title is Pattern-based GIS for understanding content of very large Earth Science datasets (NNX15AJ47G). 
Participants include: Dr Jaroslaw Jasiewicz, Dr Pawel Netzel as CO-I and Jacek Niesterowicz.

J. Jasiewicz is the PI on a grant (DEC-2012/07/B/ST6/01206) from the National Science Centre, Poland, division of Computer Science and Informatics. The title of the project is "Knowledge retrieval from large geospatial datasets." T. Stepinski and P. Netzel are CO-PIs on this project. The project aims at obtaining data on human perception of machine-calculated similarity between landscapes and at further development of SIL software.
